OpenAI’s Sora 2 Launched

OpenAI recently launched an updated version of its Sora AI video generator, unveiled at the end of last year, and it’s now available alongside a new iPhone social video app, also named Sora. The invite-only app functions similarly to TikTok, featuring a feed of short videos that users can scroll through. Unlike TikTok’s duet-style interaction, Sora encourages users to record short clips that others can transform into AI-generated deepfakes—but only with the original user’s consent.

In a Monday briefing with reporters, OpenAI staff described the launch as a potential “ChatGPT moment for video generation.” Currently, the app is available only in the US and Canada, with plans to expand internationally. Each new user also receives four invites to share with friends. There’s no announced release date for Android devices.

Sora allows users to give friends—or even the wider community—permission to create “cameos” using their likeness through the Sora 2 video model. Users whose likenesses are used remain “co-owners” of the generated content and can delete it or revoke access at any time. The app includes a “Remix” feature for interacting with other videos and trends, although video generation is limited to 10-second clips for now.

OpenAI currently imposes strict limitations on generating content of public figures, though this may change in the future. According to the announcement, “public figures can’t be generated in Sora unless they’ve uploaded a cameo themselves and provided consent for its use.” This rule applies to all users: if someone hasn’t uploaded a cameo, their likeness cannot be used. Additionally, OpenAI staff confirmed that generating X-rated or extreme content is currently impossible on the platform.
